Effy Alexakis

Photowrite’s photographer, Effy Alexakis has over 25 years experience as a photographer for Macquarie University, Sydney. She has taught photography at various institutions, mainly at the Australian Centre for Photography and at various TAFE colleges; she has received numerous grants and awards.

Effy’s personal photographic work has been widely exhibited around Australia and overseas, and is held in various collections including the Australian National Gallery, Canberra, and the State Library of New South Wales, Sydney. A 5 year relationship with the State Library of New South Wales saw the creation of a major travelling exhibition which was hosted at 9 venues over 5 years, two of which were in Greece, and all of which were state or national galleries or museums. This was called ‘In Their Own Image: Greek-Australians’.

The exhibition ‘Selling an American Dream: Australia’s Greek Café’ was launched at the National Museum of Australia in July 2008, and is currently touring Australia.

Since 2003 Effy has accompanied the Australian Centre for Egyptology under the directorship of Professor Naguib Kanawati on annual archaeological excavations in Egypt and now specialises in tomb photography. Other recent exhibitions include ‘Beyond the Breakers’ and ‘On Site Insight: An Australian Excavation in Egypt’.
